The 25. CSIT Chess Championships in Eilat / Israel

Twenty chess players - 3 from TUL (Finland), 4 from ASKÖ (Austria), 6 from SESI (Brazil) and 7 from HAPOEL (Israel) took part in the 25th(!) CSIT Chess Championship. The tournament was held in Eilat (Israel), between 23-28 October 2011 and was very strong in comparison with previous tournaments - 5 players are FIDE (the World Chess Federation) Masters - and most of the others are National Chess Masters in their respective countries.

Two extraordinary phenomena characterized the event - one was the simultaneous exhibition given by Boris Gelfand (see below), and the other one was the fact that not less than 6 players were tied for the first six places, all of them scored 3.5 points out of the possible five. However all the four criteria mentioned in the regulations for breaking the tie - the scores of the opponents, the detailed personal results, the number of victories etc. - were equal for two players - FM Kurt Fahrner (Austria) and Timo Tuomala (Finland). So, both of them got the title of CSIT Chess Co-Champions for 2011.

Places 3 to 6 were taken, respectively, by FM Felippe Fernandez Araujo, Jose Jorge De Carvalho (both from Brazil), FM Johan Krebs (Austria) and Avi Yaacov (Israel). Two players took the 7th and 8th places, respectively, with 3 points each - FM Hubert Ebner (Austria) and Markus Kiili (Finland).

Six players achieved 2.5 points each (places 9-14): Johan Steiner (Austria), Pavel Gerchikov (Israel), Sergio Murilo Araujo (Brazil), FM Teemu Topi-Hulmi (Finland), Avraham Malachi (Israel) and Luiz Gustavo Fagundes (Brazil).

Five players achieved 1.5 points each (places 15-19): Dalvan Franceschina (Brazil), Avner Shapira (Israel), Sidnei Bissacot Coutinho (Brazil), Yaron Linik and Evgeny Gordon (both from Israel).

The 20th place was taken by Amir Plut (Israel) with only half a point - but he has 85 reasons for this - one reason for each year of life!.

The highlight of the event was the simultaneous exhibition that was played by the International Grand Master Boris Gelfand against 18 participants. Gelfand won a few months ago the right to play next year against the World Champion Vishwanathan Anand (India) on the world title. So it was a great opportunity for the chess players of CSIT to play against one of the best players in the world who may be the next World Chess Champion. Gelfand won 13 games, drew four - against FM Johan Krebs (Austria), Timo Tuomala (Finland), FM Felippe-Fernandez Araujo and Luiz Gustavo Fagundes (both from Brazil) - and lost against Markus Kiili (Finland).

Finally organizer and CSIT TC Secretary Almog Burstein would like to thank the people that contributed to the success of the championship - International Chess Arbiter Malkiel Peretz who did a very good job as the Chief Arbiter, Shay Aizensher, the director of the Eilat Chess Club, who helped him very much in many aspects, the members of the organizing committee - Avigdor Dagon, Yaacov Abu-Hatzira and Oded Nachman - who did a great administrative job long before and during the Championship - all of us under the leadership and support of Yoram Arnstein, the General Director of Hapoel. Special thanks to the staff of both hotels - C hotel where we played and Siesta Hotel where we lived - and last but not least - the players and the heads of their delegations who came from Brazil, Austria and Finland to play chess in the holy land. Thank you all for your cooperation and contribution to the good atmosphere in this event.

The next CSIT Chess Championship is planned at the moment to be held in Tunisia in November 2012.
